A romantic fishing village <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While staying in Alassio, you may visit many other interesting places on the Ligurian Riviera, such as Laigueglia, a romantic village by the sea, which is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Only 5 km separate it from Alassio<\/strong>, so an easy day trip destination. The particularity of this village is the fusion of the town with the sea. Picture postcard image, the beach in winter with the colourful boats, the nets set out to dry, the backdrop of colourful buildings, the green ribbon of hills. Laigueglia has remained unchanged over time, preserving the authentic charm of a seaside village in the shadow of the 17th-century church dedicated to Saint Matthew. The two majolica-tiled bell towers of this historic building can be clearly seen from every corner of the village.Beyond their picturesque appeal, the twin towers are also somewhat unusual: they differ in height, and the crosses at their peaks are oriented according to the sea winds\u2014Maestrale and Libeccio\u2014a true reflection of the deep bond between the village and the sea.The best way to connect with the soul of this place is to wander through its narrow alleys, carruggi, and small squares, getting pleasantly lost among its hidden corners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to be missed: the Bastione del Cavallo, a large 16th century tower erected on the seashore to protect the village from Turkish raids, later transformed into a prison and lazaret. The Oratory of Saint Mary Magdalene (1616\u201334) is home to two moving ex-voto offerings: one depicting the shipwreck of coral fishing boats, and the other a pirate attack. Ex-votos from sailors and fishermen can also be found in the Church of the Immaculate Conception (1661), recently restored. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equally enchanting is the ascent to the secluded Chapel of Our Lady of the Feathers, built by Catalan coral fishermen in the 17th century. Perched on the rocks of Capo Mele promontory, it marks the closest point on the mainland to Corsica\u2014just 140 kilometers away.Every year on August 5th, an age-old religious ceremony takes place: the feast of Our Lady of the Feathers, marked by a dawn pilgrimage.The most important historical event of the summer is the \u201cSaracen Landing Week,\u201d which reenacts the arrival of the corsair Dragut in 1546, when he looted and sacked the town. The highlight of the event is the recreation of the naval battle, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n
