The Pleasure Garden

A Tribute to Hitchcock’s Grand Hotel Beach Scenes

Introducing The Pleasure Garden, the upcoming suite at Grand Hotel Alassio set to open its doors in March 2024, destined to become one of the season’s most captivating attractions. This elegant suite pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s inaugural work, a silent film he directed at the youthful age of 26 during the summer of 1925. Upon its release in Italy, the film was titled Il labirinto delle passioni. Hitchcock, alongside his then-fiancée Alma Reville (who served as the assistant director and editorial secretary), ventured to Germany to film the indoor scenes at Emelka Studios in Munich.

A lesser-known fact is that certain outdoor scenes were actually captured right on the beach in front of our Grand Hotel, now a private beach. At the time, a throng of onlookers gathered, proving to be quite intrusive—an experience Hitchcock later likened to a nightmare when speaking to the press.

This unique baptism in our Ligurian town, although tumultuous, paradoxically foretold good fortune, despite the challenges encountered during the film’s production. Following the confiscation of his film equipment at the Italian border upon arrival, Hitchcock was also robbed in Genoa while preparing to film a scene depicting a ship’s departure in the ancient harbor area.

To honor Alfred Hitchcock’s legacy or perhaps extend an olive branch to him, our Grand Hotel has dedicated a corner suite with sweeping views of Isola Gallinara and a splendid 30-square-meter terrace gazing out over the sea. Situated on the first floor, just steps away from the Hemingway Suite, this haven is adorned with furniture and accents that subtly evoke the director’s sojourn in Alassio. In addition to showcasing select art pieces, the suite will exude an enchanting “secret garden” ambiance within the hotel itself. Guests will have the privilege of using a private bar to craft their favorite libations, including a specially concocted cocktail aptly named The Pleasure Garden.
